Abstract
DUCEUX, Isabelle. Aristoteles Sinicus: An Examination of an Early Modern Age Aristotelian Commentary in Chinese from a Comparative Perspective. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.131, pp.19-42. ISSN 2448-7554.
This article presents an analysis of how Aristotelian thought was adapted into the Chinese language, a task undertaken by Jesuit missionaries in the early 17th century. To conceive the specificity of this cultural and intellectual encounter, Aristotelian commentaries written in Chinese are compared to contemporary Jesuit writings from Europe and America. The study leads to understanding that adaptation as a process of accommodation, and emphasizes the degree to which cultural traits influenced the modalities of the encounter.
Keywords : Jesuits; Aristotelian philosophy; commentaries; China; cultural encounters.
