If the pleasure of reading, as Ricoeur says, "is built in the work of art and is projected outside the work of art at the same time" in a process of union "between the interior and the exterior that demands a dialectic approach", it is necessary to insist in the "dialectic model" that makes possible such relation. Nevertheless, there are readers that move from the inside to the outside and never turn back: they go out of the text to distort its sense. The cooperation with the text is therefore dissolved, or, as Eco would say, the text is used in aberrant ways, even if the arguments of the non critical reader have a relation with the text's configuration. Some of the contributions of semiotics to the training of the critical reader in academic contexts are discussed in this paper, paying special attention to different readers and their responses to a story written by Juan José Arreola. This work intends, thus, to describe what a critical reader is.
