Abstract

DIAZ SACCO, Alessandra. What characterizes teachers with greater authority? The perspective of Chilean students. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2016, vol.38, n.153, pp.34-50. ISSN 0185-2698.

This study seeks to reveal the profiles of Chilean teachers who are most obeyed by their students based on characteristics recognized by students and to identify if there is a relation between these profiles and sociocultural characteristics of students. Using quantitative methodology, cluster analysis was conducted on a sample of 874 secondary students. Then the chi-square test for independence was applied to clusters by student socio-economic status (SES) groups and according to learning achievements by educational institution. The results suggest a decline in traditional forms of authority and a gradual imposition of a profile of teachers recognized as experts. Finally, belonging to different SES groups and the learning achievements of the students’ educational institution demonstrated low correlations with the profiles of the most obeyed teachers.

Keywords : Obedience; Teacher authority; Teacher leadership; Student-teacher interaction; Secondary students; Cluster analysis.
