Over the whole history university has experienced a pendulum movement between authoritarianism and participation. University also has accompanied the changes experienced by the societies in which they live. This article presents a short story of this institution from its conventual life and its development around the cathedrals to the emergence of the modern academic corporations, grades an collegial life. The article reviews the English, Humboldt and Chicago models in order to analyze the topic of higher education, and finally enumerates the main features of contemporary university, such as assessment, governability and decision making.
