Abstract

ISAIS CONTRERAS, Miguel Ángel. Travelers facing Mexican porcophilia. Some Impressions about Jalisco During the Second Half of the 19th Century. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2022, n.63, pp.39-64.  Epub Apr 24, 2023. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2022.63.77700.

The present text analyzes some travelers’ memoirs that contain notes about Jalisco’s customs, landscapes and culture. It is often the case that rural societies can only be understood through these sources. This includes aspects that we use to discern through the lens of cultural history, like the relation between Jalisco’s rural society with its environment and animals, particularly pigs. In the middle of 19th century, Jalisco’s rural population used these animals not only as a protein source, but also as a useful resource for livelihood and daily life. This relationship attracted the attention of the reviewed travelers, since they abhorred pigs.

Keywords : travelers; Jalisco; cattle; pigs; Western Mexico.
