This article analyzes the educational reforms that fostered chemistry teaching in both secondary and professional levels in Mexico City in Independent Mexico. It encompass the period from 1796 -when the subject matter was institutionalized in Colegio de Minería- to 1900, when it was established in the following schools: Medicine, Military College, Agriculture, Arts and Crafts, Commerce and Management, Teachers’ Training Schools, Elementary Schools, National Preparatory School, and Practical Mining Schools outside the capital. It is concluded that the most influential teachers (engineers and doctors) were involved in this development by acting as members of public educational commissions and as teachers as well, in accordance with the ideals of progress and modernization of the nation.
