Abstract

HERMANN LEJARAZU, Manuel A.. Símbolos de poder: un análisis comparativo entre la iconografía del Clásico maya y los códices mixtecos. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2007, vol.30, pp.79-106. ISSN 0185-2574.

Among ancient Middle American scholars it is a common idea that Pre-Columbian Mixtec codices were only a huge compendium of genealogical records and registers of place names. Nevertheless, a detailed examination of the corpus will lead us soon to find historic and anthropological data contained in each one of the pictures depicted on these Posclassic documents. Through iconography it is possible to identify a great deal of objects and symbols related to power exerted by rulers. In this paper I will try to recognize the elements which conform the ritual and political action of Mixtec rulers, compared with several images and emblems of power shown in Classic Maya iconography.
