Since the end of the eighties, Mexican exports grew very rapidly and experienced a dramatic change in their composition. At present, manufacturing exports account for about ninety percent of Mexican exports. Despite this extraordinary change in the export sector, the rate of growth of the economy has not accelerated. In this paper, this fact is explained by examining two features of current Mexican exports. First, manufacturing exports require a huge quantity of imported inputs. Secondly, the low value added of an important fraction of the exports. These features are specially clear in relation to the outputs of the maquiladora industry, which is currently Mexico's leading export sector.
