Abstract

LEFLAIVE, Gabrielle. Miseria y exclusión, dependencia y explotación: los yonquis de los años 2000. Cuicuilco [online]. 2010, vol.17, n.49, pp.103-138. ISSN 0185-1659.

Based on an ethnographic research carried out between 2000 and 2004 in the marginal shanty-town of "Las Barranquillas" (Madrid) which constitutes Spain's major drug scene where heroin and cocaine are sold and used, this article describes the drastic material and health conditions in which the junkies of the 2000's are living. It shows how the most harmful aspects of drug use are favored by the marginal context and the degradation in the shanty-town, by the harshness of the social relationships in which their economic dependence throws them, and by the tensions produced by a life style that tends to foster addiction, encouraging escalation and compulsive forms of use.

Keywords : Drugs; heroin; drug addiction; marginalization; social exclusion; ethnography of drugs.
