The production of quality plant is necessary for its establishment in the field.  Objective:  To evaluate the effect of different moisture retainer doses, substrate mixtures and irrigation frequencies on growth of Prosopis laevigata.  Materials and methods:  The effect of five moisture retainer doses (0.0,1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 g·L-1), two irrigation frequencies (every 48 and 96 h) and two substrate mixtures (base mixture [55 % peat moss + 24 % vermiculite + 21 % agrolite]) and composted bark [50 %] + peat moss [50 %]). Mesquite plants were evaluated at three months of age in a randomized block experimental design with a factorial arrangement.  Results and discussion:  The factors, both individual and in interaction, caused significant differences (P &lt; 0.05) in plant height, diameter and biomass. The best results were obtained using the base mixture, irrigation every 48 h and moisture retainers at doses of 1.5, 4.5 or 6.0 g·L-1. Substrate was the most influential factor.  Conclusion: Growth of P. laevigata is favored through the most beneficial combination of substrate type, irrigation frequency and moisture retainer dose.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción: En el norte de México, el mezquite es utilizado ampliamente en las reforestaciones. La producción de planta de calidad es necesaria para su establecimiento en campo.  Objetivo:  Evaluar el efecto de distintas dosis de retenedores de humedad, mezclas de sustrato y frecuencias de riego sobre el crecimiento de Prosopis laevigata.  Materiales y métodos:  Se evaluó el efecto de cinco dosis de retenedores de humedad (0.0,1.5, 3.0, 4.5 y 6.0 g·L-1), dos frecuencias de riego (cada 48 y 96 h) y dos mezclas de sustratos (mezcla base [peat moss 55 % + vermiculita 24 % + agrolita 21 %]) y corteza composteada [50 %] + peat moss [50 %]). Las plantas de mezquite se evaluaron a los tres meses de edad en un diseño experimental en bloques al azar con arreglo factorial.  Resultados y discusión:  Los factores, tanto individuales como en interacción, ocasionaron diferencias significativas (P &lt; 0.05) en la altura, diámetro y biomasa de la planta. Los mejores resultados se obtuvieron utilizando mezcla base, riego cada 48 h y retenedores de humedad en dosis de 1.5, 4.5 o 6.0 g·L-1. El sustrato fue el factor más influyente.  Conclusión: El crecimiento de P. laevigata se favorece al combinar el tipo de sustrato, la frecuencia de riego y la dosis de retenedor de humedad adecuadamente.]]></p></abstract>
