<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0187-57792025000100148&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S0187-57792025000100148&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S0187-57792025000100148&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen: En la zona metropolitana de Puebla y Tlaxcala la descarga de residuos hacia la subcuenca del Alto Balsas constituye una problemática ambiental en aumento en los últimos años, debido a la ampliación de asentamientos urbanos, esto genera riesgos a la salud derivados del consumo y utilización de agua contaminada para riego. El objetivo es evaluar la contaminación por metales pesados en suelos y aguas superficiales utilizadas para la producción agrícola y ubicar las fuentes de contaminación potenciales, a través de un análisis espacial de la concentración de metales pesados. El estudio se llevó a cabo en tres zonas representativas de la subcuenca, obteniendo muestras de agua y suelos, se obtuvo el índice de geoacumulación (Igeo) y el factor de enriquecimiento (FE); y se realizó un análisis de distribución espacial de metales pesados mediante la técnica IDW para la interpolación. Los resultados muestran que los promedios de Cd, Co, Cr y Ni están por encima de las recomendaciones de la U.S. EPA para agua de riego, mientras que los valores de Cr superaron los límites máximos para suelos agrícolas. El Igeo mostró una contaminación fuerte a moderada para las concentraciones de Cd, Co y Zn, en tanto que la contaminación por Cr, Cu y Ni fue moderada. El FE presentó un enriquecimiento significativo para los elementos como Cd, Co, Cr, Cu y Zn mostrando que la contaminación está relacionada con fuentes antropogénicas. A partir de la distribución espacial fue posible identificar que la contaminación por metales pesados se relaciona con la creciente expansión urbana e industrial en la región del Alto Balsas. La falta de regulación de las descargas de desechos ha contribuido a la acumulación de metales pesados, generando contaminación sobre los suelos agrícolas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary: In the metropolitan area of Puebla and Tlaxcala, waste discharge into the Alto Balsas sub basin constitutes an environmental issue that has increased throughout recent years due to the expansion of urban settlements, causing health issues derived from consumption and irrigation water use. The objective was to evaluate heavy metal contamination in soils and surface water used for agricultural production and to conduct a spatial analysis of heavy metals locating the potential sources of contamination. The study was carried out in three representative areas of the sub-basin, collecting water and soil samples. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and enrichment factor (EF) were obtained, and the spatial distribution analysis for heavy metals was made by interpolation using the IDW method. The results showed median concentrations of Cd, Co, Cr, and Ni above the U.S. EPA recommendations for irrigation water-use. Cr values exceed the maximum levels for agricultural soil-use. The Igeo showed strong to moderate contamination in concentrations of Cd, Co, and Zn elements, while Cr, Cu, and Ni resulted in moderate contamination. The EF showed significant enrichment for elements such as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, and Zn, proving that the contamination is related to anthropogenic sources. From the spatial distribution, it is possible to identify the contamination sources of heavy metals, associating the causes with the increasing urban areas and the industrial growth in the Alto Balsas region, which, due to the lack of regulation for waste discharges contributes to the accumulation of heavy metals, generating pollution in agricultural soils.]]></p></abstract>
