The strut-and-tie method is an useful tool to design concrete elements which have stress concentrations or abrupt changes in its cross section. Reinforced or prestressed concrete beams with dapped ends are example of these elements in which both conditions appear. This paper discusses the applicability of this method to prestressed concrete beams with dapped ends, of which there is little experimental information. To this end, a laboratory model that represents the dapped ends of an AASHTO type beam has been developed by means of the strut-and-tie method; it has been tested in order to analyze their behavior in terms of strength, cracking, and stresses in the struts and ties that constitute the models.
