Abstract

MARTINEZ-JUAREZ, Iris E. et al. CAMELICE/PPE/INNN Mexican consensus on the current use of valproate in patients with epilepsy. Arch. Neurocien. (Mex.) [online]. 2025, vol.30, n.2, pp.79-103.  Epub Oct 14, 2025. ISSN 2954-4122.  https://doi.org/10.24875/anc.25000003.

Magnesium valproate is a broad-spectrum antiseizure medication for all seizure types, epileptic syndromes and/or epilepsies. A medical consensus on the use of magnesium valproate in epilepsy was conducted using the RAND-UCLA method, integrating the clinical experience of 28 specialists addressing the indications of magnesium valproate in various populations. Five working groups were created, covering pediatric to elderly, women of childbearing age and patients with neuropsychiatric comorbidities. Descriptive statistics were applied. It was agreed that magnesium valproate can be used effectively and safely as monotherapy, bitherapy, or polytherapy for multiple seizure types, epileptic syndromes and patients with psychiatric comorbidities; in pediatric, adolescent, adult, and elderly populations. Magnesium valproate is an effective and safe antiseizure medication, including its use in patients with psychiatric comorbidities and certain special groups.
