ARIAS TORRES, Daniela; HERRERA TORRES, Hugo Amador  e  COLIN MARTINEZ, René. Dynamics of the employed population in Michoacán, México, 2005-2023. Estimates with shift and share. Carta econ. reg. [online]. 2025, vol.38, n.136, pp.125-153.  Epub 05-Fev-2026. ISSN 2683-2852.  https://doi.org/10.32870/cer.v0i136.7927.

The objective of this paper is to identify the dynamics of what the employed population (EP) in Michoacán experienced in relation to the movements in the ep recorded in the Central Western Region of Mexico from 2005 to 2023. The method used for analysis was the traditional shift and share and with structural modification. The results obtained using the traditional shift and share put Michoacán into the category of a «losing» region during the period analysed. Hypothetically the state lost 128 823 jobs (total effect). This decrease, according to the method, was the result of problems of relative sectoral specialization (structural effect) and of problems linked -in most economic sectors of Michoacán- to market access and the revitalization of production factors (differential effect). The shift and share with structural modification also shows the entity to be a «loser» region from 2005 to 2023. The loss was, hypothetically, 154 767 jobs (total effect). This situation, based on the method, primarily reflects difficulties in entering markets and optimizing production factors (differential effect). Economic policies aimed at creating industrial crowds in the state could help alleviate the unfavorable production environment.
