Resumen

TETREAULT, Darcy. Great accelerations and social-environmental struggles on Mexico’s extractive frontier. Carta econ. reg. [online]. 2025, vol.37, n.135, pp.87-112.  Epub 28-Jul-2025. ISSN 2683-2852.  https://doi.org/10.32870/cer.v0i135.7919.

The great acceleration of the world economy’s social metabolism after World War ii marks the beginning of a new geological epoch in the Earth’s history, known as the Anthropocene or -from a critical point of view- the Capitalocene. This article begins with a review of the debates around this affirmation to contextualize the findings of an investigation into the rates of extracting hydrocarbons and metallic minerals from Mexico, between 1950 and 2023, and their relationship to the multiplication of socio-environmental conflicts. It draws from theories that explain the expansion of the extractive frontier in terms of dispossession and struggles over the commons, while underlining the role of the state in the promotion and regulation of extractive activities and as a mediator of social environmental conflicts.

Palabras llave : extractivism; social metabolism; fossil fuels; mining; Mexico.
