As the main agricultural producer in Mexico, the state of Jalisco produces 13.9% of all the poultry and livestock in the country. The livestock sector is more important than the agrarian sector, as it represents two thirds of agricultural production in the state. Poultry, and especially eggs, are the main products, with markets all over the country. Cattle and hogs are also important, and most of all is the production of milk. Eggs and milk have to be produced on a large scale for producers to maintain their leading position in competition with others. Regions of the state specialize in different products, and Lagos de Moreno is a leader in important products, using economies of scale and agglomeration associated with eggs and milk. Public policy needs to take these regional disparities into account. Lagos de Moreno and La Barca could be considered examples of «best practice» in the consolidation of competitive clusters for livestock reaching distant markets.
