Resumen

MEDINA MIRANDA, Héctor. The Wixaritari communities and the paradoxes around their study. Carta econ. reg. [online]. 2021, vol.33, n.127, pp.125-147.  Epub 27-Sep-2024. ISSN 2683-2852.  https://doi.org/10.32870/cer.v0i127.7807.

The Wixaritari are an indigenous society from Western Mexico, also known by the exonym Huichol. The objective of the article is to analyze the paradoxes that specialists have produced in the description of these communities. It pays special attention to the academic premises that exclude or discriminate against the Wixaritari who live outside the state of Jalisco. The article has been motivated by direct ethnographic observations in the communities of Jalisco, Durango and Nayarit, but it focuses on the discourses of social scientists who have studied them, to analyze it from a historical perspective. Therefore, it seeks to show that Wixarika society is more diverse than has generally been claimed and that the region they occupy is also broader.

Palabras llave : Wixarika; community; traditional government; diaspora; Huichol.
