Abstract
CUEN HERRERA, Bruno Eduardo; BRACAMONTES NEVAREZ, Joaquín and CAMBEROS CASTRO, Mario. The Development and Welfare of the Population in Mining Municipalities of the State of Sonora. Vértice univ. [online]. 2023, vol.25, n.94, e65. Epub Apr 21, 2023. ISSN 2683-2623. https://doi.org/10.36792/rvu.v25i94.65.
In recent years Sonora stands out in the production of gold and silver, being the only national producer of molybdenum, amorphous graphite and wollastonite (S. Economía, 2020) with mines in both urban and rural locations. The objective of this work is to know the levels of development and welfare of the population in the municipalities that host the main mining centers of Sonora for 2020. First, a municipal socioeconomic development index is estimated by using PCA and then, to evaluate the results, it is compared with the well-being indexes calculated by the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (CONEVAL). It was found that in the municipalities where the main mining centers of Sonora are located, 4 are classified with Very High socioeconomic development, 1 in the High stratum, 2 in Low development and 3 with Very low development; on the other hand, half of the municipalities had almost 40% of their population in poverty despite having mining, showing an inverse relationship between development and welfare indexes, which could be improved by reforming policies such as the Mining Fund.
