This article contains the basic text of an online course on the topic mentioned in the title of the article and is carried out within the scope of an international research project undertaken by the Universidad Panamericana de México. The article is completed with the contents of a GOOGLE DRIVE platform accessible online at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1kbZFH2Kdq6qJ1Vd_aO8oe-XE6ymqDSWJ?usp=sharing for distance learning, consisting mainly of teaching materials, student exercises, a repository and joint teacher/student research projects. The aim is for the student, through the critical reading method, to develop critical thinking by comparing different versions of Cortés’ physical and character traits in order to learn about the history of New Spain and to reach personal criteria on the issue. To do this, we introduce the theory of critical reading, identify the physical traits and ways of being of Cortés and present the testimonies of the chroniclers of the time and the videos and films that have subsequently interpreted these traits and ways of being.
