LOPEZ VILLALOBOS, Valdemar y VILLALOBOS FELIPE, Olivia Rubí. The Rejection by Parents of Inclusive Language in Free Textbooks of the New Mexican School for Elementary Education. Debates hist. [online]. 2025, vol.13, n.2, pp.217-247. Epub 08-Sep-2025. ISSN 2594-2956. https://doi.org/10.54167/debates-por-la-historia.v13i2.1939.
The implementation of the New Mexican School has generated a national debate around free textbooks. This new model of education proposes a deep transformation of basic education in Mexico, including the renewal of textbooks. However, the new books have been the object of criticism especially for the use of gender inclusive terms such as “todes” (i.e. them) and other gender inclusive content. Therefore, this work has the objective of analyzing the meaning that parents give to these educational materials and the reasons behind their rejection. A theoretical framework that includes some important elements to consider is proposed. These elements are included in the new educational model regarding gender inclusive language in textbooks and the role of families in this topic. A qualitative methodology is employed with the support of the theory of social representation that allows us to explore the meanings given by parents and specialists. For this purpose, there were semistructured interviews, questionnaires and a semantic network that were carried out. In this last instrument the words generated around concepts were registered along with the semantic weight they carried. This work offers original research as it points out that the rejection of gender inclusive language is linked to a variety of factors such as the perception of an underlying ideology in the contents, the concern for educational quality and the lack of previous consultation with families.
