GARCIA GARCIA, Ana María del Socorro; MENDEZ ANDRADE, Verónica  y  LOPEZ GARCIA, Wendy Eugenia. Writings That Transcend: Professor Harriet C. Fay and Her Influence on Veracruz Teacher-Translators in the Early 20th Century. Debates hist. [online]. 2025, vol.13, n.2, pp.193-216.  Epub 08-Sep-2025. ISSN 2594-2956.  https://doi.org/10.54167/debates-por-la-historia.v13i2.1936.

For Mexican women, access to education was part of a long and complex process that, at the end of the 19th century, received an important boost thanks to the gradual introduction of women into academic spaces in various disciplines and regions of the country. In the case of Veracruz, the founding of the Xalapa Primary Normal School in 1886 was a transcendental event as it allowed the inclusion of women as students and teachers. In particular, the figure of Professor Fay is important as she was one of the first women to hold a position of this nature. Through researching documents, including newspapers and bibliographic resources it is promoted an approach to school culture inserted in a context of progress and inclusion in the national pedagogic context. The purpose of this text is to make teachers who taught in the Normal Schools visible as well as the graduates who actively participated in the translation of texts and the transmission of knowledge of the English language. This work has been scarcely studied for the Porfiriato period. Their contributions were at an international level and their legacy led to the founding of programs for interpreters and translators, resulting later in the establishment of language institutes and colleges.
