ACOSTA BADILLO, Susana Julieth. Colegio Juárez and Private Education for Boys in Monterrey (1907-1921): Everyday Life in a Shared Space. Debates hist. [online]. 2025, vol.13, n.2, pp.47-77. Epub 08-Sep-2025. ISSN 2594-2956. https://doi.org/10.54167/debates-por-la-historia.v13i2.1838.
This main objective of this article is to identify the characteristics of private education in Nuevo León toward the end of the Reyismo period, through a case study of a boys’ private school in Monterrey: the Colegio Juárez. Drawing on school documents and press reports, we aim to describe in detail the daily life of the institution, its students, their parents, and the Sociedad Educadora “Benito Juárez,” a benefactor association that shaped not only the school’s finances but also its teaching methods, structures, and practices according to its own interests. Founded in 1907, Colegio Juárez soon became one of Monterrey’s leading private schools. Despite ongoing controversy, it managed to coexist for several years with the state’s most important educational institution, Colegio Civil, which at the time served as the headquarters of the official secondary education. The study focuses on the period when Colegio Juárez operated within the premises of Colegio Civil, an approach that makes it possible to analyze the dynamics between a private and a public school, as well as to examine which of the two received greater support from the state government and for what reasons.
