This article explores the conditions that favored the appointment of Maria Cristina Salmoran de Tamayo as the first female justice of the Mexican Supreme Court in 1961. Justice Salmoran de Tamayo was nominated by President Adolfo Lopez Mateos and was assigned to the Forth Chamber, specialized in labor law. The study proposes that her rise to the highest court of justice could be explain in terms of the political system, known as presidentialism, and the political recruitment method of the Mexican elite of that time.
