The Spanish-born painter José Escudero y Espronceda, who settled in Mexico City from the 1860s onwards, was an atypical character who developed a clear business profile. This portraitist explored a variety of circuits to establish new commercial practices and ventured in advertising to publicize his work. For four decades, he resorted to constant exposure in the press, thanks to his relationship with columnists and editors, who supported him and published extensive praises of his work. This helped to consolidate his career and projected him as a public figure. The articles in the press dedicated to the painter show the profile of an exceptional and imaginative entrepreneur, setting him apart from other contemporary artists in Mexico.
