Abstract

GOMEZ GOYZUETA, Ximena. Towards a Decolonial View of “La hispanización” in Letras de la Nueva España, by Alfonso Reyes. Bibliographica [online]. 2022, vol.5, n.2, pp.137-162.  Epub Nov 29, 2024. ISSN 2594-178X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iib.2594178xe.2022.2.276.

This article proposes an interrelated analysis of two of the eight essays in Alfonso Reyes’ Letras de la Nueva España (1943-1944): “Introducción: poesía indígena” and “La hispanización”, that touches the subject of the education/evangelization of the native inhabitants of México. For an analytical approach, we aim to reconstruct the cultural horizon from which Reyes wrote his work to elucidate its reception in the historical processes that underwent in 16th century New Spain, as well as underscoring the implications of its transmission. Moreover, this analysis is put into question with posterior researches from fields such as Anthropology, History, Philology, and Literary Studies. This paper stems from a Cultural History standpoint, mainly from Roger Chartier’s explanation of ‘transmission-reception’ processes and Walter Mignolo’s decolonial postulates on the construction of literary canons in the Latin American context.

Keywords : Alfonso Reyes' essays; education-evangelization; New Spain’s literature; literary canons; decolonial perspective.
