Abstract

GAMBA CORRADINE, Jimena. A Hispanic Society’s Exceptional Chapbook: Cristobal Mansilla’s Invectiva contra el heresiarcha Luthero (RM 335.5). Bibliographica [online]. 2022, vol.5, n.2, pp.15-60.  Epub Nov 29, 2024. ISSN 2594-178X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iib.2594178xe.2022.2.345.

The Hispanic Society of America holds the only copy of a quite exceptional chapbook published in Burgos (1552) in Juan de Junta’s press: the only known 16th century invective written in vernacular language against Martin Luther. This paper presents an examination and an edition of the text. Firstly, the article delves into the history of this piece (which was identified circa 1960 by Antonio Pérez y Gómez) and provides context on the production of similar materials of the time. This is followed by a literary analysis of the invective to evince how it links to Ovid’s Ibis -and thus the classical tradition of invective writing-, as well as to the biblical tradition. The latter is of the utmost relevance in the text to illustrate the numerous types of death the author wishes upon the reformer.

Keywords : Chapbooks; 16th century poetry; invective; Martin Luther; Cristóbal Mansilla.
