Abstract

ACEVES AVILA, Roberto. En Tokio. The Account of a Mexican Diplomat on Japan in a 19th Century Chirimen-bon. Bibliographica [online]. 2020, vol.3, n.2, pp.139-168.  Epub Dec 09, 2024. ISSN 2594-178X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iib.2594178xe.2020.2.71.

This paper presents a practically unknown travel literature text, En Tokio, written in 1899 by Mexican diplomat Ramón G. Pacheco, third secretary of the Mexican Embassy in Japan from 1899-1901, and special envoy and ambassador from 1907 to 1913. His work contains personal impressions of Japan in the late 19th century. It has a double relevance: it reflects the perceptions of a diplomat that, years after writing this book, as ambassador, became a key element in Mexican and Japanese commercial negotiations, and it is also a bibliographical rarity, printed in Japan on crepe paper and with a traditional Japanese binding that makes it one of the first books of its kind printed by a Mexican in Japan.

Keywords : Ramón G. Pacheco; chirimen-bon; Japan; orientalism; travel literature.
