Abstract

LOPEZ HERNANDEZ, Hugo Daniel. Book Collections and Libraries. A Conceptual Question. Bibliographica [online]. 2020, vol.3, n.1, pp.185-210.  Epub Dec 09, 2024. ISSN 2594-178X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iib.2594178xe.2020.1.70.

The goal of this article is to present elements to show the coexistence of concepts such as book collection and library during the 18th Century in New Spain, and to analyze the diference between them through archive records, dictionaries, the Juan José de Eguiara y Eguren’s Bibliotheca mexicana and colonial portrait paintings in Mexico. The conclusion is that the conceptual difference lies in the use of book collections by Spanish colonial owners.

Keywords : Book collections in New Spain; libraries in New Spain; Spanish colonial concepts; Spanish colonial library history.
