Abstract

HERNANDEZ ROURA, Sergio Armando. Ignacio Manuel Altamirano at the Borderland of the (Hoffmanian) Fantastic. Bibliographica [online]. 2019, vol.2, n.1, pp.135-162.  Epub Dec 09, 2024. ISSN 2594-178X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iib.bibliographica.2019.1.44.

This article explores the role of fantastic literature within some texts of Ignacio Manuel Altamirano and, particularly, the influence of E. T. A. Hoffmann’s understanding of the fantastic. Faithful to his nationalist convictions, the Mexican writer was not a stranger to the mechanisms of the fantastic; he even used them at different moments, always located on the borderlands of that literary tradition. From his textual criticism and Costumbrismo works, as well as other clues found in some of his narratives, it is possible to know Altamirano's opinion on the matter, and to approach his way of understanding the (Hoffmanian) fantastic.

Keywords : Reception; Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann; Ignacio Manuel Altamirano; fantastic literature; assimilation.
