Abstract

FERNANDEZ FERNANDEZ, Íñigo. The “True Political Science” of José Joaquín Pesado in the Newspaper La Cruz. Bibliographica [online]. 2019, vol.2, n.1, pp.41-69.  Epub Dec 09, 2024. ISSN 2594-178X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iib.bibliographica.2019.1.42.

This paper reviews 11 articles published by José Joaquín Pesado in the Catholic newspaper La Cruz in 1858, under the title “Observaciones sobre la verdadera ciencia política” [“Comments on true political science”]. It is a set of understudied documents that show the vision of a Catholic and conservative journalist on what he understood by political science, the aspects that it should consider and the ways in which it could be applied in Mexico. Here the analysis of the most important precepts in the discursive line used by Pesado is highlighted, as well as his line of reasoning to facilitate its understanding among readers, summarized in four ideas: order as a necessary condition for Mexico to be constituted in a nation; society considered as a natural necessity of man, as well as supernatural one; the impossibility of the existence of a State and legislation separated from a religious frame of reference; the recognition of the republic as the only viable form of government for Mexico.

Keywords : Political science; conservatism; José Joaquín Pesado; press; religion.
