Abstract

ALMEIDA CABREJAS, Belén. Materiality in Alfonsi Historiography: from the First Drafts until the Final Manuscript (and Beyond). Bibliographica [online]. 2018, vol.1, n.1, pp.7-24.  Epub Dec 09, 2024. ISSN 2594-178X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iib.bibliographica.2018.1.6.

By Alfonso X’s orders two huge historiographical compilations were composed in the second half of the 13th Century: Estoria de España and General estoria. The writing process of both texts was extraordinarily complex, as it involved the translation of many medieval and antique sources and their combination in a final text through several compositional steps. Said final text was copied in an illuminated manuscript; later, new copies were made using as a basis the final text and/or former versions, which originated a highly complicated transmission landscape, a veritable silva textual, textual jungle, as it is known by the critics. This work analyzes the process of composition and dissemination of that writings.

Keywords : Historiography; Medieval literature; Alfonso X; Traduction; Ovidius; Lucanus.
