Abstract

DELACROIX, Eugène. The Puzzle of a Dictionary of Fine Arts. Part 1. Interpret. Rev. herméneut [online]. 2025, vol.10, n.1, pp.227-246.  Epub June 20, 2025. ISSN 2448-864X.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.irh.2025.1/00s329x7w044.

Eugène Delacorix, considered as one of the most prominent French painters of the 19th century was also a remarkable writer. After entering the Academy in 1857 he planned to write a dictionary of the arts, which he left unfinished. However, the idea of the dictionary project and some of its entries were recorded in the Diary that he wrote during a long part of his life. This Journal is full of ideas around art, personal anecdotes and ideas for paintings, it is one of the most interesting documents of this historical period. We translated from French the Journal’s entries of January 10th, 13th, and 23rh, where he starts to dream of the Dictionary. On a second article we will include the corresponding to January 25th and February 4th. We have chosen to translate the Edition of the Journal, edited by André Joubin, and published by Plon in 1932, which is the most complete.

Keywords : Eugène Delacroix; journal; dictionary of arts; romantic French artists.
