Abstract

SAIZ, Mauro Javier. Beuchot and Vattimo: Multiculturalism and Human Rights in a Hermeneutical Key. Interpret. Rev. herméneut [online]. 2024, vol.9, n.2, pp.173-196.  Epub Oct 24, 2024. ISSN 2448-864X.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.irh.2024.2/010s2701wo579.

Mauricio Beuchot and Gianni Vattimo are two contemporary exponents of hermeneutical philosophy. Although related, each one develops the potentialities of this general current in slightly different ways. Here we seek to trace these differences through each author’s approach to multiculturalism and human rights. While Beuchot wishes to preserve a notion of culture rooted in human nature, Vattimo denounces this concept as arbitrary and violent. Where the first finds in multiculturalism a possibility of learning and reaching some transcultural content, the second emphasizes diversity and incommensurability. Finally, while in one case a strong justification for human rights can be derived, in the other they are treated with reluctance, remaining aware of the potential imperialist effects of this language.

Keywords : Beuchot; Vattimo; Hermeneutics; Multiculturalism; Human Rights.
