CONTRERAS TINOCO, Karla Alejandra y CASTANEDA RENTERIA, Liliana Ibeth. Space and the pregnant body: approximations to practices, devices and technologies for self-care in pregnant women. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2018, vol.25, n.72, pp.31-50. ISSN 2448-8488.
In the present text, we discuss which domains, devices and technologies the pregnant women living in Guadalajara (Jalisco State) are exposed to within the different spaces through which they transit? In order to cover the above points, we start from the assumption that space is multidimensional and that, in this regard, there are disputes and struggles between different social fields. It should be noted that we consider the pregnant woman’s body as a strategic space on which practices, discourses and disputes regarding self-care devices and other technologies are related to. The work, though mainly theoretical in nature, covers ethnographic approaches as well as analyzing 40 articles from the Mexican magazine Mi bebé y yo (My baby and I). Some of the conclusions we reach demonstrate the fact that the pregnant body is a space of sociocultural dispute, along with being a space of resistance.
