CARDENAS OVALLE, Ricardo Arturo. Residential electricity demand: A quantile regression perspective. Ens. Rev. econ. [online]. 2020, vol.39, n.1, pp.87-114. Epub 12-Abr-2021. ISSN 2448-8402. https://doi.org/10.29105/ensayos39.1-4.
The aim of this paper is to estimate the Mexican household electricity demand through a quantile regression. Data to identify the residential electricity tariff is used for the first time, facilitating the conversion of electricity expenditure to kilowatt-hours. However, an overestimation in electricity consumption is incurred for households whose tariff includes an entitlement to public lighting charge since this information is not available. The elasticity income of the demand was found to be inelastic through the consumption deciles, with a range of [0.25, 0.28], while the elasticity price and cross price of the demand turned out to be elastic with ranges of [-1.93, -1.42] and [-1.81, -1.04], respectively. It was also observed that households equipped with air conditioning consume on average between 49 % and 69 % more than the rest of households.
