Abstract

VAZQUEZ FLORES, Erika Julieta. The image of indigenous people in the Chiapanecan press. A comparative analysis of the newspapers Tiempo and El Cuarto Poder, 1988-1984. Let. hist. [online]. 2015, n.12, pp.141-167. ISSN 2448-8372.  https://doi.org/10.31836/lh.12.1781.

The main objective of the study is to find what has been written about the indigenous peoples in two newspapers distributed in San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas: Tiempo, a local paper, and El Cuarto Poder, which has statewide distribution. The period chosen was 1988-1994, which covered the administration of Carlos Salinas de Gortari, in whose government there were important reconsiderations in the indigenous policies which would reverberate decisively in the Zapatista uprising in the south of Mexico.

Keywords : press; racism; critical discourse analysis; indigenous; Chiapas.
