Abstract

RIBEIRA LOPEZ, Diego. <Pasar a + infinitive> as a Resultative Sequential Periphrasis: Between Continuity and Closure. Anu. let. lingüíst. filol. [online]. 2025, vol.13, n.1, pp.129-160.  Epub June 13, 2025. ISSN 2448-8224.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.adel.2025.13.1.00x328sw35.

The periphrasis <pasar a + infinitive> has received a variety of treatments in the grammatical tradition, ranging from a denial of its periphrastic nature to its acceptance in sometimes contradictory taxonomies: aspectual periphrasis, semi-periphrasis, or periphrasis equivalent to a discourse marker. This paper presents one of the results obtained from a grammatical and semantic-pragmatic analysis of a corpus of over 7 000 periphrases in contemporary European Spanish. The data obtained demonstrate that two values, continuity and closure, influence the discursive behavior of this periphrasis and that this behavior can be ascribed to resultative periphrases, one of the groups that make up our model of sequential periphrases.

Keywords : verbal periphrasis; discourse markers; pragmatics; semantics; syntax.
