FERNANDEZ XICOTENCATL, Rosa Isela; ALMAGRO VAZQUEZ, Francisco y TERAN VARGAS, José. An analysis of the total factor productivity expanded in the manufacturing industry of Mexico 2003-2010. Investig. adm. [online]. 2013, vol.42, n.112, pp.51-63. ISSN 2448-7678.
The total factor productivity (TFP) is an essential variable for the growth and development of the economy. Displays the efficiency with which the economic system of the country. The most traditional, in terms of measurement is to relate the gross domestic product (GDP) created from the factors that generate, capital and labor.
The above calculation does not include intermediate consumption (raw materials, services and energy) as an important component of the value of production. Meanwhile, manufacturing is key to the developing countries like Mexico. This research has been proposed to demonstrate the efficiency of manufacturing output by calculating and analyzing the performance of the extended total factor productivity (PTFA), which includes intermediate consumption (Ci) as a factor of production.
To achieve the stated objective, the estimated econometric model to show the impact of Ci in the Gross Value of Production, which differs from GDP in the first registers the Ci. In turn, we used the Solow model with a production function Cobb-Douglas, for the estimation of traditional productivity (TFP) and the PTFA, both for the economy as a whole and for manufacturing.
The results are of great importance, as shown, by comparing the evolution of manufacturing in the total economy, a much greater weight of Ci, in manufacturing. In the structure of the production, more than 70% of this component is mainly imported from the United States. This implies an important channel of transmission of the crisis of the Mexican American economy, becoming one of the most significant structural problems for the efficiency of that industry Mexico.
