Abstract

RAMIREZ LOPEZ, Javier Eduardo. From Broken Bones to the Reconfiguration of an Indian City: Tezcoco in the Early Years of Spanish Administration (1519-1551). Hist. mex. [online]. 2024, vol.74, n.2, pp.511-554.  Epub Nov 05, 2024. ISSN 2448-6531.  https://doi.org/10.24201/hm.v74i2.4825.

This article has the general objective of showing how an Indigenous city was consolidated in the wake of the Conquest - that is, of broken bones -and during the first years of the Spanish monarchy in the New World. It focuses on the connections and interconnections administered by agents or intermediaries of the Crown and is divided into three aspects. The first refers to the way in which the Acolhua dominion was incorporated into the Spanish Crown; the second is centered on the role of the evangelization process, as well as the relationships between Spanish and Indigenous nobles; lastly, it examines the alliances and benefits that Indigenous nobles received through the support of peninsular Spaniards, the base of which was provided by the influence of the Franciscans, which demonstrates the importance of political networks.

Keywords : Indigenous city; Tezcoco; Spanish administration; Acolhua dominion; evangelization; Indigenous nobles.
