UGALDE RODRIGUEZ, Octavio. Public libraries and Marxism. Estud. sociol [online]. 2026, vol.44, e2898. Epub 06-Mar-2026. ISSN 2448-6442. https://doi.org/10.24201/es.2026v44.e2898.
The book Public Libraries and Marxism rescues the experience of socialist public library systems established during the 20th century. They return to the origins of public libraries in mechanical institutes in England until the establishment of public libraries for the emancipation of the oppressed masses. In contrast to the Western library model, they propose a cutting-edge public library model aimed at the working class. Using a critical and documented marxist-leninist approach, the authors make visible their influence on the development of a socialist library economy and public library systems in countries such as the Soviet Union, China, Laos, Vietnam, Cuba and North Korea. A substantial contribution to understanding the relationship between libraries, social classes and the State.
