Abstract
MAC-CLURE, Oscar; BAROZET, Emmanuelle and AGUILERA, Carolina. Defining Your Position in Times of Crisis: ¿Social Class or Other Attributes?. Estud. sociol [online]. 2024, vol.42, e2401. Epub May 24, 2024. ISSN 2448-6442. https://doi.org/10.24201/es.2024v42.e2401.
The objective of this article is to understand how individuals define their social position during the sociopolitical crisis opened by the social outbreak of 2019 in Chile. A vignette-based survey is used in a statistically representative sample in Santiago and Puerto Montt. The results show two main ways of naming the subjective social position, according to social class or other attributes. Respondents who refer to social class self-classify themselves in the lower-middle class, while those who make reference to other attributes tend to subjectively position themselves in the lower class. It is also estimated to what extent the type of subjective position depends on the socioeconomic conditions of the respondents.
Keywords : subjective social position; social classes; social outburst.
