FLORES GRANADOS, Fabio. Fauna in the Construction of the Symbolic Landscape in the South of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec: the Case of the River Otter in Pre-Hispanic Times. An. antropol. [online]. 2024, vol.58, n.1, pp.61-75.  Epub 20-Out-2025. ISSN 2448-6221.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iia.24486221e.2024.58.1.8559.

As the main archaeological evidence, the animal spellings embodied in different rock art sites suggest a particular relevance of the native fauna in the construction of the landscape and over time. As a primary ethnobiological record and considering the landscape as heritage articulated by places where stories are woven and form identity, the approaches to those memories start from the place name Guiigu’ Bi’cunisa not only as a geographical descriptor, but also as a physical and social space in the that very different frameworks are linked between the neotropical otter and the inhabitants of different localities along the Los Perros river. The analysis of the tangible or intangible forms immersed in the landscape composition is practiced through the articulation of traditional zoological notions among Zapotec speakers from the southern region of the Isthmus, regarding some rock art representations and various zooarchaeological evidence. As a historical process that combines elements of the environment and the labeling of certain prints, both during myths and legends, as well as various musical, plastic and artistic expressions, provide useful information on the importance that native fauna could have had in various cultural and symbolic expressions of the period. We verified that the man-fauna networks, as well as the interactions between people and the feelings of closeness or affinity for certain spaces and certain events, are not only recorded but also incorporated as life stories.
