PADIN, Esteban Ariel. Ethnicity and Indigenous Internationalism in the Buenos Aires City, Argentina, During the 1970s. An. antropol. [online]. 2024, vol.58, n.1, pp.7-17. Epub 20-Out-2025. ISSN 2448-6221. https://doi.org/10.22201/iia.24486221e.2024.58.1.85642.
The objective of this article is to describe a series of intercultural meetings and organizations of a supranational nature, which allowed the expansion of the ethnopolitical movement in the Buenos Aires City (CABA). It works with the Indigenous Association of the Argentine Republic (AIRA), from 1975, and the Centro Kolla (Cenko), founded in 1979.
The selection of the international events described is justified by the participation in them of the leaders of Cenko and AIRA. Furthermore, it is the result of multiple interviews and archival work in private collections and public institutions.
In international meetings and spaces, AIRA and Cenko shared experiences on violated rights and action strategies to resolve demands and conflicts. The organizations investigated defined, in part, their ethnicity with ideologies and with different types of resources obtained outside national borders.
The link between AIRA and Cenko with international bodies and groups has not yet been investigated. Therefore, this work seeks to carry out a first systematization and states that these spaces were central to the survival of the ethnopolitical movement of CABA, during the last Civic-military Dictatorship (1976-1983). The research also proposes to analyze the AIRA and the Cenko as intercultural Buenos Aires political experiences and, in this way, contribute to dismantle the denials of identity that fall on the urban indigenous population.
