Abstract

BALUTET, Nicolas. Social Mobilities in Blanca Sol by Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera: Serving a Reflection on Education and Nation-Building. Connotas. Rev. crit. teór. lit. [online]. 2025, n.31, e570.  Epub June 23, 2026. ISSN 2448-6019.  https://doi.org/10.36798/critlit.i31.570.

This article analyzes the novelBlanca Sol(1888) by Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera in relation to the dynamics of social mobility to show how the author problematizes women’s education and the construction of the Peruvian nation at the end of the nineteenth century. The study draws on the notion oftransclassproposed by Chantal Jaquet and on the category ofingenium, understood as the network of social, cultural, and family determinations that shape individual trajectories. Within this framework, it examines the factors that influence the fate of the characters, particularly the female protagonists. The analysis reveals that most of the characters do not embody true “class defectors”, since they retain inherited forms of capital. The article contributes to Latin American literary studies by showing howBlanca Solcombines social critique, educational reflection and a proto-feminist vision.

Keywords : 19th-century Peruvian literature; protofeminism; transclass; social mobility; gender and 19th century.
