Citizen trust in political institutions is fundamental for a functioning democracy and one of its possible causes is religiosity. However, the relationship between these variables does not always appear, in addition, this phenomenon has only been reviewed peripherally for the Mexican case. This research explores whether religiosity could be a cause of political trust using the ENCUCI survey. Through regressions, it was found that there is an important relationship between how religious the person is and their trust in political parties, local governments, deputies and senators. This relationship is independent of sex, education, socioeconomic level, party identification and nationalism. Furthermore, it was found that it is the intensity of religiosity and not the religious group ties that generates political trust. This contradicts previous studies that linked religiosity and trust through a social capital mechanism. This paper consistently proves the relationship between religiosity in Mexico and political trust, but leaves pending the investigation of which component of religiosity is mainly responsible for such a political effect.
