Resumen

GUTIERREZ SANCHEZ, Héctor. Possible rational support for the Mexican President and his party. Rev. mex. opinión pública [online]. 2024, n.36, pp.205-224.  Epub 04-Feb-2025. ISSN 2448-4911.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fcpys.24484911e.2024.36.86245.

It is known that perception of the state of the country (especially regarding the economy and security) is related to support for the president and his party, this could be evidence of a rational support that rewards good governmental results, but there are contradicting hypotheses in this regard. To investigate it, state level data on security and economy were collected, however, said data did not show substantive relationships either with presidential approval or with the vote for Morena, which doesn’t support a rational judgment. In contrast, a consistent relationship was found between government approval and receiving social programs, which could imply some rational thinking, but not necessarily provide adequate incentives for policy makers.

Palabras llave : public opinion; presidential approval; rational choice; AMLO; Morena; elections.
