MONTANO, Ernesto. Democracy on the prowl? Re-election in El Salvador and Nayib Bukele’s political discourse on Twitter. Rev. mex. opinión pública [online]. 2024, n.36, pp.109-135. Epub 04-Feb-2025. ISSN 2448-4911. https://doi.org/10.22201/fcpys.24484911e.2024.36.86837.
This article aims to analyze the discursive construction from the populist theory in the profile of the social network X, of the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele (@ nayibbukele). The analysis is in a context where the president is seeking reelection for a second term. 189 tweets were analyzed, at a stage spanning 16 September 2022 (date on which he announces he will seek re-election) until 26 June 2023 (day when he formally enrolls as a pre-candidate). A qualitative investigation was carried out, from the theory of the populist myth (Casullo, 2019) in which the construction of the hero is identified, the identification of the traitor, the presentation as an outsider of the leader, as well as the descriptions about his movement (past, present and future). The results show that the president exhibits populist features, with strong authoritarian leads. The present work is of vital importance for understanding populism within digital logics and in a context of global democratic fatigue. On the other hand, we consider it a priority to analyze the new governments in Central America which, in line with the conclusions on the figure of Bukele, may represent a democratic retreat in the region.
