Abstract

BRISENO-TELLEZ, Jocelyn Montserrat; TREJO-ARTEAGA, Olivia; KANEK-REYES, Leonardo  and  ARTEAGA-OLMOS, Edgar. Local product perspective: The case of chile rayado in Hidalgo, Mexico. Estud. soc. Rev. aliment. contemp. desarro. reg. [online]. 2025, vol.35, n.66, e251641.  Epub Apr 13, 2026. ISSN 2395-9169.  https://doi.org/10.24836/es.v35i66.1641.

Objectives: To document the knowledge that the inhabitants of Pachuca de Soto have about chile rayado and describe its uses, both in the rural areas where it is produced and in the city, where it is marketed, as well as to elaborate an infographic to disseminate information about this fruit. Methodology: Using an exploratory qualitative methodological approach, five in-depth interviews were conducted with people who work with chile rayado in the municipality of La Misión. The information and photos collected were used to create an infographic and to design a second interview, which was administered to thirty people in Pachuca de Soto. Results: Symbolically, the chile rayado is used against the “mal de ojo” (evil eye). In Pachuca, it is sold mainly in traditional markets, although some gourmet stores also distribute it. The interviewees showed interest in this local product and suggested strategies to spread more information about it. Limitations: Only people in the center of the city were interviewed, so the perspectives on chile rayado are limited to that sample; however, an attempt was made to interview men and women of different ages in an equitable manner. Conclusions: This work highlights the need to document the agro-food diversity of local products that are still commercially available in urban areas.
