The milpa is an agricultural system that encompasses practices, beliefs and local knowledge built over the years. We reflect on the incidence of land use change in the different activities and processes that are interwoven in the milpa as a unit of study through a literature review on the subject, in the northwestern area of the State of Mexico, Mexico. Traditional agricultural practices, a wide diversity of weeds with different uses, a diverse local gastronomy and associated rituals were identified.
