BLANQUEL CASTRO, Paulina e JUAREZ-LUNA, David. The role of social norms in the employment status of Mexican women. Rev. econ. [online]. 2025, vol.42, n.105, pp.146-171. Epub 22-Set-2025. ISSN 2395-8715. https://doi.org/10.33937/reveco.2025.472.
This paper aims to analyze social norms' role in Mexican women's employment status. To do so, we employ a probit model, considering three dependent variables, each corresponding to employment status: 1) Homemaker, 2) Part-time job, and 3) Full-time job. We use data from the seventh wave of the World Values Survey. Social norms are divided into two groups: gender norms and work values. The analysis concludes that gender norms are associated with increases in the probability of being a homemaker. On the other hand, these norms are mostly associated with decreases in the probabilities of working part-time and full-time. Additionally, work values are mostly associated with decreases in the probability of being a homemaker. On the other hand, these values are mostly associated with increases in the probabilities of working part-time and full-time.
